At Little Folks School, each child is seen and valued for the duration of their time with us. We understand that children move at their own pace and continue to support every child's needs, interests, and development. This continues to be true for children who stay with us until they are ready to go to Kindergarten. Our older students take on leadership roles in their classrooms and set good examples for their younger classmates. These older students spend the majority of their day in their mixed age classroom where they get the social and emotional benefits of leadership roles and build patience and empathy as they navigate a class of younger children. Classroom teachers regularly plan for open-ended activities that lend themselves to reach all of their students on a variety of levels with opportunities for challenges and extensions.
To supplement the classroom learning and help our oldest students transition to Kindergarten after Little Folks School, we offer “Transitional Kindergarten," an afternoon program affectionately called TK. This group meets a few afternoons a week and spends time working on pre-academic skills such as memory and recall, letter formation, sound/symbol correspondence, recognizing and forming numerals, recognizing quantities, and more! With same age peers, these students engage in group games that support skill building in concentration, turn taking, and reinforcement of academic skills. Children in this group also take a weekly trip to the Georgetown library where each student checks out a book. Our library trips foster a sense of independence and responsibility while also fostering a love of reading!
As our students transition to Kindergarten after leaving LFS, we continue to receive feedback that they were prepared and ready!
